PBM Products, LLC – How it Began

PBM Products was founded in 1997 and introduced the first store brand infant formulas in the United States.

Created with the mission to provide parents with high-quality, low-cost alternatives to expensive national brand infant formula, PBM revitalized the infant nutrition landscape. By meeting the exacting standards of the FDA as outlined in the Infant Formula Act of 1980, PBM was the first company to provide parents with affordable infant formula options they could trust.

This revitalization in the infant formula category was made possible when PBM acquired the state-of-the-art Wyeth Factory in Georgia, Vermont, the only ISO 9001:2000-certified, infant formula-manufacturing facility in the United States. The facility in Vermont (PBM Nutritionals, LLC) allowed PBM to begin producing and distributing their formulas under the store brands of major retailers including Walmart, Target, Babies R’ Us, Sam’s Club, CVS, and other leading retailers in the United States.

Expanding the business in 2009, PBM then acquired a second facility in Covington, OH, that is operated under PBM’s high quality standards, and is currently undergoing ISO 9001:2000 certification. The PBM facilities in Vermont and Ohio adhere to stringent FDA guidelines and use ingredients that are sourced in North America.

PBM Products as a Perrigo Company

In 2010, two leading companies in the private label space joined forces when PBM became part of the Perrigo Company, the largest manufacturer of store brand over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical products.

Sharing the mission to provide consumers with high quality, low cost healthcare and nutritional products, the business partnership made PBM, now Perrigo Nutritionals, the largest manufacturer and distributor of store brand infant formula and nutrition products in the world - producing 50 formulas to 47 retailers in more than 30,000 locations.

As part of Perrigo, PBM remains headquartered in Gordonsville, Virginia, and currently employs 600 people worldwide.

Rapid Growth & Innovation

Named among Entrepreneur's Hot 500 of America's fastest-growing businesses, our company continues to experience exponential growth by offering store-brand and branded nutritionals to major retailers throughout the United States and internationally.

As true category leaders, Perrigo Nutritionals has set the benchmark for key innovations in infant formula products compared to national brand competitors.

  • March 2006 – With U.S. consumers turning to organic products, we created the first FDA cleared Organic Milk-Based Infant Formula with DHA that also contains Organic Whey, Nonfat Milk and Lactose.
  • May 2007 – With the popularity of vanilla-flavored formulas for toddlers on the rise, we created a national brand equivalent formula that was available at Meijer stores more than two years before a similar product by Enfamil® launched nationally.
  • July 2008 – we developed a prebiotic formula for export to the Chinese market in 2004. Following a stringent regulatory review process, PBM Nutritonals was the first manufacturer to receive FDA approval of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) as a prebiotic ingredient.

Looking to the future, Perrigo Nutritionals continues to develop new product innovations to appeal to all parent choices and infant nutrition needs.

Enfamil® is a registered trademark of Mead Johnson & Co.
